Installing a2-wire heat-only low voltage thermostatis a straightforward process. Heres a step-by-step guide to help you:
-
Turn Off the Power:
- Before starting any wiring work, turn off the powerto your heating system. You can do this by switching off the breaker that powers the thermostat.
-
Remove the Old Thermostat:
- Carefully remove the cover from the old thermostat.
- Note the wires attached to it. Typically, there will be two wiresusually labeledR(for heating) andW(for the heat source).
- If the wires are the same color, label each with the corresponding terminal letter using masking tape.
- Loosen the terminal screws and pull the wires from the terminals.
- Remove all mounting screws securing the thermostat base to the wall and take off the old thermostat.
- Examine the wire ends. Trim off any damaged portions and strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from each wire.
-
Mount the New Thermostat:
- Separate the body of the new thermostat from its base plate following the manufacturers instructions.
- Place the base plate against the wall and use a level to ensure its perfectly level.
- Mark the holes for the mounting screws using a pencil.
- Drill pilot holes for the new mounting screws.
- Attach the base plate to the wall.
-
Wire Connections:
- Connect the wires to the new thermostat base:
- R (heating)wire goes to theRterminal.
- W (heat source)wire goes to theWterminal.
- If theres a jumper betweenRCandRterminals (for central air or fan systems), remove it.
- Insert two AAA batteries into the new thermostat (if required) and snap it onto the base.
- Connect the wires to the new thermostat base:
-
Power On and Set Up:
- Turn the power back on.
- Set the time, temperature, and mode on the new thermostat according to the manufacturers instructions.
Remember to follow safety precautions and consult the specific instructions provided with your thermostat. If you encounter any difficulties, consider seeking professional assistance. Stay warm!to prevent the potentiometer wire in the thermostat from getting hot and breaking, move the pointer to 1.2, so that the tail is sitting on the rivet that the white wire hooks to.
